    When is Summer Academic Programming for students?


    Elementary: Monday, June 25 – Thursday, July 26, 2012 (M-TH)
    Grade 11 & 12 High School Credit Recovery: Monday, June 25 – Tuesday, July 31, 2012 (M-F)
    Grade 8 Promotional: Thursday, June 21 – Friday, July 27, 2012 (M-F)
    Be the Change: Monday, June 25 – Thursday, July 26, 2012 (M-Th)
    Special Education Extended School Year (ESY): Monday, July 2 – Friday, July 27, 2012 (M-F)
    Community Assessment and Training (CATP): Monday, July 2 – Friday, July 27, 2012 (M-F)

    On Wednesday, July 4, 2012 all Summer Academy programs will be closed.

    How does a student register for Summer Academic Programming?
    Elementary students can register for Summer Session at their current school, in MPS Student Services, Room 133 beginning in May, or directly at their selected Summer Session site.

    Grade 11 & 12 High School Credit Recovery students should register with their school counselor or with the staff at the Summer School Office.

    Grade 8 Promotional Program: Principals must recommend students for the Grade 8 Promotional program and registrations are completed by the student’s current MPS school.

    Be the Change: Priority will be given to eighth grade students attending Vincent and Washington High Schools in the fall. Detailed registration information will be available in late March.

    ESY student registrations are handled by the Special Services Department.
       
    CATP student registrations are handled by the IEP teacher and the school’s transition coordinator in conjunction with the Special Services Department.

    When do students register?
    Registration begins at schools in May and continues until the first day of each summer session. Seats are limited. Though registrations will be accepted until the start of Summer School, students will be accepted only in courses and/or sites where space is available.
      • High School: Late walk-in registration days are Thursday, June 21 – Friday, June 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Summer School Office, Room 261, Central Services.

    Who should go to Summer Academic Programming?
    Elementary: All students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

    Grade 11 & 12 High School Credit Recovery: Students may enroll in the credit recovery program if they have previously failed a course required for graduation.

    Grade 8 Promotional: This promotional program is designed for grade 8 students who have missed proficiency in 2 or less content areas. Students must be recommended by their MPS principal. 

    Be The Change: This transition program is designed for grade 8 students looking to boost core academic and social development skills prior to the start of the new school year. Priority will be given to students attending Vincent and Washington High Schools in the fall as incoming freshman.

    ESY: Students with special education needs should only be enrolled if their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) mandates extended school year services.

    CATP: Students with special education needs should only be enrolled if the IEP team decides that the student needs summer placement to maintain skills gained during the year or if they were not able to be involved in job training due to scheduling conflicts during the school year.

    What is the student day?
    Elementary grades Summer Session students will have a literacy block and math block between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday only.

    Grade 11 & 12 High School students attend Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Each class is two (2) hours in length either 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Students can enroll in two credit recovery classes to recoup a total of 1.0 unit of credit.

    Grade 8 Promotional students have an academic program from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday – Friday.

    Be the Change students have an academic/social development program from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday – Thursday.

    ESY students attend a morning program from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday – Friday.

    CATP students attend the Central Services Food Service Site from 7:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. or any of the other job sites from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Monday – Friday.

    Where is it?
    Elementary: Summer Session sites are listed on the back of the registration form and are posted on the MPS Summer School portal page.

    Grade 11 & 12 High School Credit Recovery: Milwaukee High School of the Arts

    Grade 8 Promotional: Washington High School.

    Be the Change: Washington High School.

    ESY: Elementary sites include: Bethune, Gaenslen, and Rogers. The middle/high school site is Hamilton. Contact the Special Services Department for specific offerings available at sites

    CATP: MPS-Central Services food service program and various other job sites.
     
    Cost? 
    There is NO cost for any morning Summer Academy service for students living in the city of Milwaukee. Costs may be incurred by ESY students who move at the end of the school year to a new school district. Additionally, the afternoon wraparound and recreation programs may require a program fee. Parents are encouraged to ask at the summer site or contact the Recreation Department, 475-8180, directly for further information.

    Transportation?
    Transportation is not provided for students attending the regular elementary summer session program.

    Summer Academy students enrolled at the Grade 8, Be the Change, or high school program will receive county bus tickets if they live beyond the two mile walk zone of their selected summer site. Parent/guardians must provide transportation to the Summer Academy site on the child’s first day of attendance.

    Most students enrolled in the ESY program will be provided door-to-door bus transportation. This  includes a morning pick-up and mid-day departure.
       
    Most CATP students in the OJT food service program are expected to provide their own transportation to and from their job site. City bus tickets may be provided to those students until they receive their first paycheck. Some CATP students may receive transportation to and from their job site if they are receiving vocational assessment.

    Are students with special needs eligible for Summer Academy?
    All students with special needs are welcome in the regular Summer Academy programs. Some students with special needs may be eligible for the extended school year (ESY) program if it is mandated in the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  Parents should contact their school’s Special Education Supervisor for their child’s special education program.
